| Once again I was traveling the back roads in Marlboro,
Vermont. The fall leaves were swirling up from the sides of the dirt
road as I drove. Above me the overhanging, yellow-leafed trees seemed to
form a semicircular vault. I attempted to catch glimpses of roadside
settings. It's really a euphoric experience to discover a place that you
can compose a photograph. This time I was about to find out that the
real scene was concealed from view farther off in the woods. I had
stopped near a meandering stream flowing over some gently slopping
rocks. Fallen leaves were sprinkled about, some clinging to the rocks,
others being swept away by the current. After taking a couple of shots,
I proceeded to follow the small brook into the woods. As I progressed,
the sound of rushing water grew more intense. "A waterfall!,"
I thought. It produced an incredible stirring in my gut. The sound grew
louder as I continued following the stream. It was an awesome scene. The
water was rushing between huge outcroppings of rock. As I watched the
water flowing between the large slabs of rock, I was struck by the
contrast of these two elements - the gentleness of the water and the
massiveness of the stone. In order to create this sensation in my image,
I used a very slow shutter speed to give the cascading water the
appearance of gracefulness. |
